A lather strap, commonly known as a razor strop, is a grooming tool traditionally used to maintain the sharpness of a straight razor. It is typically made from high-quality leather, canvas, or a combination of both, and is designed to align and polish the razor’s edge rather than sharpen it in the conventional sense.
The strop works by removing microscopic burrs and straightening the fine edge of the blade after honing or between shaves, ensuring a smooth, comfortable shave. It’s often hung from a hook or held taut with a handle while the razor is drawn across it in a specific motion. Some strops come with a dual surface—leather for final polishing and canvas for preliminary stropping.
